As today marks the one year anniversary of the 2016 Presidential election Americans have made their voice heard at the ballot box in 2017.

Loud and clear constituents took the voting booths in Virginia to elect Danica Roem as the first openly tansgender state legislator. Roem has easily defeated her religious conservative opponent Bob Marshall who once described himself as Virginia’s “chief homophobe”.

“Danica Roem’s historic victory is a clear warning to anti-equality lawmakers across the country that the days of attacking LGBTQ people to scare up votes are over,” said HRC President Chad Griffin.

While Roem ran a issue-driven campaign which included knocking on more than 75 000 doors Marshall ran a distinctly transphobic campaign during which he refused to debate Roem.

Roem’s victory is seen as a victory for all transgender Americans.
