The LGBT community in Hong Kong took to the streets for the city’s annual Pride Parade.

Several thousand people participated in the parade during which authorities were called out for lagging behind on equal rights.

Many participants spoke out by saying that the mindset remains traditional and called for members of the LGBT community to speak up for their right to equality. Hong Kong has before the first Asian city to host the Gay Games in 2022. However, authorities have announced that it will appeal this decision.

Nevertheless, the Parade follows on a May court ruling in Taiwan which held that laws which prevent same-sex unions are in violation of guaranteeing the freedom of marriage. The ruling has thereby paved the way for same-sex couples to be married.

The fight for equality continues in Hong Kong as several activists criticized the government for excluding the LGBT community.
