American president Donald Trump is about to sign a religious liberty executive order.
This latest executive order, expected to be rolled out soon, will potentially provide legal protections for people to claim religious exemptions which some groups claim will allow for LGBT people to be discriminated against.
Moreover, this executive order is in line with Vice president Mike Pence’s policies in which he has previously advocated for the signing of a religious liberty executive order. Pence’s history of pushing an anti-LGBT agenda has been well documented.
Furthermore, during his time in Indiana Pence signed a Religious Freedom Restoration Act in 2015. This act drew severe criticism from several groups and businesses within the state, as they believed that the Act could be used to discriminate against LGBT people on the basis of religion. Following this, Pence signed an amendment to the bill, which aimed to prevent anyone from using the law in order to discriminate against LGBT people.
Nevertheless, as it remains unclear as to Trump’s goal is with the religious liberty executive order it is likely to hurt the progress made by former President Barack Obama for LGBT groups.
