An Australian couple have made a plea to the Government to legalize marriage equality before it’s too late.
Peter and Bon have been together for over 50 years but their time together is slowly running out.
Two years ago, Bon was diagnosed with cancer but late last year, he was told he only had a few months to live.
The couple urge the Australian Government to legalize marriage equality before it’s too late.
Bon says in the video: ‘When I first saw Peter I thought, “Wow!”‘
‘It was definitely love at first sight,’ he says.
The Australian couple were one of the first openly gay couples in the country.
Just by simply existing, they risked imprisonment or institutionalization, but appeared on television news show Chequerboard.
They hoped by being visible and active, they could affect a change in society.
The video features original footage from their television interview 45 years ago, as well as heartfelt stories of their courtship.
Peter says: ‘We’ve been second class citizens for all of the 50 years we’ve been together.
‘It would be absolutely wonderful if we could say one day, “We are equal”,’ Peter says.
