The Democratic party in the United States is re-introducing a federal bill which will prohibit discrimination against LGBT people.

As it stands, no federal protections exist against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity within the United States. While Democrats have consistently attempted to add LGBT rights protections to existing anti-discrimination civil rights laws, Republicans in Congress have blocked both the Equality Act and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

However, Democrats have reintroduced the Equality Act in Congress. Nevertheless, as Republicans are in control of both houses hopes that the bill will pass are not high.

Previously, the Equality Act had garnered support from industry heavy hitters such as Apple and Coca-Cola.

A statement from Apple said: “At Apple we believe in equal treatment for everyone, regardless of where they come from, what they look like, how they worship or who they love. We fully support the expansion of legal protections as a matter of basic human dignity.”
