Most moviegoers would agree that there are few things as satisfying as a good twist in the narrative. But when these dramatic twists come to life they produce moments that will live in the memory for quite some time.
The Annual Academy Awards ceremony exists to celebrate and reward outstanding work in film. However, an embarrassing faux pas resulted in a dramatic moment worthy of a Hollywood script.
In the final award of the night Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway walked out to present the Oscar for the Best Picture. However, as Beatty opened the envelope to announce the winner he paused. He showed the card to his co-presenter who proclaimed Damien Chazelle’s La La Land as the winner. Everyone involved with the film, including best actress winner Emma Stone, took to the stage and set about delivering their speeches.
However, moments later a producer walked onto the stage with a new envelope. As it turns out the incorrect envelope was given to Beatty and Dunaway and it was in fact Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight who had won Best Picture. Shock swept through social media quickly as comparisons were drawn to Steve Harvey’s infamous Miss Universe mix up.
Suffice to say no one will ever forget how Moonlight came to win the prestigious award. What’s more, the touching film about a young black gay man’s journey of self-discovery in a rough Miami neighbourhood most definitely deserved the honour.
