Many people who hear the term “asexual,” are actually confused about what it means. Human asexuality is a complex topic, and it is one of vital importance to educate the public. Because asexuality is something that many people do not have a clear understanding of, it is our intention to educate and provide information that will provide better insight.
What Asexual Means
Asexuality is a sexual orientation, just like homosexuality, bisexuality or heterosexuality. Asexual simply means that a person does not experience sexual attraction for others. Any person can be asexual – it does not matter what their gender is, how old they are, what religion they may be, what profession they have or anything else – it is just a description of their orientation and nothing more. There is no single “type” of asexual person and many people that consider themselves asexual still date, have relationships, fall in love, get married, have children and everything else that goes along with having a relationship. Any or all of these things can happen without sexual attraction involved.
Many Gray Areas
Asexuality can be a difficult concept for many people to understand. There is a great deal of a gray area involved in the topic, and there is no all-encompassing definition that people go by. People that are asexual can still feel romantic attraction to another person without having the desire for sexual involvement, but they may also not feel romantically attracted to others. It can be difficult to identify in yourself as you try to figure out what feelings you may or may not have ever experienced.
Orientation Does Not Matter
Whether or not you consider yourself asexual or not does not matter; what is important is that everyone deserves to have equal rights without a definition involved.
