German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged President-elect Donald Trump to respect the rights of all LGBT people.

The Chancellor added that Germany’s willingness to work with Trump depends on the stance he takes on equality for all. Specifically, Trump’s stance on LGBT rights has been concerning. He has stated that he would consider overturning marriage equality.

“Germany and America are connected by values of democracy, freedom and respect for the law and the dignity of man, independent of origin, skin colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation or political views,” said Merkel.

“I offer the next President of the United States close cooperation on the basis of these values.”

Besides Trump his running mate and Vice-President-elect Mike Pence is on record as supporting conversion therapy as a ‘cure’ for gay people.
