Sarah Wong, a Dutch photographer started her ongoing project Inside Out: Portraits of Cross-Gender Children in 2003, where she photographs cross-gender children on their way to a new identity. These portraits are of the first children to receive therapy developed by Peggy Cohen-Kettenis. Cohen-Kettenis is the founder of Europe’s first clinic for adolescents with gender dysphoria. The clinic is situated at VU University in Amsterdam.
“The Netherlands has probably the most progressive attitude toward gender variance in the world – transgender kids included,” says Wong.
