Brazilian telenovela Liberdade Liberdade (“Freedom Freedom”) has its first ever gay sex scene, in what’s also believed to be a first for Brazilian TV.

Set in the 18th century, the show has long documented the attraction between characters Andre (played by Caio Blat) and Colonel Tolentino (Ricardo Pereira), But last week the programme took things to a new level when their relationship was consummated.

While a gay kiss was aired previously on another telenova, Love Of Life, the steamy scene reportedly marks the first sex scene between two men on Brazilian television, reports New Now Next.

While there has been some backlash from religious groups, one of the scene’s stars, Caio Blat, has defended the scene, saying “I am very happy to be representing this story”.

“It adds to the feeling of the show, addressing various forms of prejudice and discrimination.”

“People realize these are contemporary issues that are being addressed in a historical context.”
