Portia de Rossi discussed in an interview with The Conversation with Amanda de Cadenet her nerves about coming out in 2005.

Her perception of being gay was “strange”, she reveals, largely due to the absence of notable lesbian icons in popular culture. Since she came out in 2005, de Rossi has been more open about her sexuality and her marriage to Ellen DeGeneres.

“Having to hide something like that just ruined me. It really, really killed me”

“I really, honestly, think that anybody who is openly gay and visible is powerful. It doesn’t matter what you do, you are impacting people.”

De Rossi continues to inspire LGBT community members globally through opening up about her struggles as a teenager and helping those unsure of themselves come to terms with their own sexuality.
