Lila Perry, a seventeen year old Transgender student in Missouri has been subjected to mass transphobia from her high school peers. In 2014, Perry came out as Transgender, and once the school semester began again the male-to-female student requested the school allow her access to the girls’ bathroom and changing facilities, rather than the unisex ones which she was already visiting. Hundreds of her school peers protested the request, worried that she may expose herself to the girls’, a claim which Perry has firmly denied.
The Transgender student reflected that the situation was parallel with the black civil rights movement of the 60s, where white people said they were not comfortable in bathrooms with black people. Perry believes that she did not want segregation, which is how she expressed the unisex / gender neutral toilet made her feel.
